FREELANCE LIFE | NO. 1
I've been working as a full-time freelance graphic designer / illustrator for quite some time now, and I have recently been receiving multiple emails asking me for advice regarding this field. Because of this, I decided to begin a series of blog posts regarding the "Freelance Life." The series will consists of advice, recommendations and experiences I've had while being a freelance designer.
So, to start the series off I wanted to share my top 5 tips I wish someone had shared with me when I was first starting out:
1. STAY ORGANIZED
it seems kinds of redundant but its far to easy to get off track, so keeping a planner (and actually using it) is a life saver.
2. BECOME KNOWLEDGEABLE
Taxes, none of us really like them (you know it's true) , but they're an important part of our lives, so become informed! Keep track of your business expenses, and signup for an accounting program or get together with a real life accountant to assist you.
3. TRUST YOUR YOUR INSTINCTS
Every designer has a "gut" feeling about all of their potential clients. Sometimes it's not the perfect match, if this is the case, politely let your potential client know.
4. ESTABLISH AND KEEP A STEADY DESIGN RATE
I know it might be tempting to take that "easy" job for less than what you usually charge because you think it won't take that long right? Wrong, most of the time these "easy" jobs take just as long as every other design job you've ever had and establishing a design rate and keeping to it will save you time and money in the long run.
5. TREAT YOURSELF
This is something I still have to work on, I'm kind of a chronic "over achiever" and can't be without my phone, iPad and macbook for too long without feeling overwhelmingly anxious that I might be missing an email. But put your phone down, iPad down, and computer away and take the time to relax, you've earned it and most importantly you deserve it.
So there you have it, my top 5 tips for all beginning freelance designers. If any of you have questions you would like answered in future "FREELANCE // LIFE" posts, let me know by leaving a comment below! Hope everyone is having a lovely day!
